In Australia, the industrialisation of poultry farming has resulted in many welfare compromises for chickens. Across Australia, there are over 11 million battery-caged egg-producing hens living in cramped, overcrowded cages. The RSPCA believes ‘Hens Deserve Better’!

Layer hens and meat chickens are two different breeds of bird - grown for two different purposes. Meat chickens by name and nature are bred to produce meat and lots of it. More than 590 million chickens are grown for meat in Australia.

Battery Hens

Approximately 4.7 billion eggs were produced in Australia last year, and nearly 70% of these eggs come from 11 million hens in cages. RSPCA believes Hen’s Deserve Better. Please join the ‘Hens Deserve Better’ campaign for a cage-free egg industry.
